Silent screenshot capture via exposed JavaScript APIs
Published Sep 16, 2024 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
Improper access control in Mattermost Desktop App 5.8.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to capture screenshots through JavaScript APIs. Mattermost has not published the code locus or missing authorization check that exposes Electron screen-capture functionality. Reachability requires attacker-controlled JavaScript to execute in the desktop app; the bounded consequence is silent capture of visible screen content.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
