Local code execution via relative cmd.exe search
Published Sep 16, 2024 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
Uncontrolled search path handling in Mattermost Desktop App 5.8.0 and earlier allows local users to execute code on Windows. The app searches for cmd.exe without an absolute path, allowing an attacker-supplied executable in the user's Downloads folder to be selected. Exploitation requires placing the file in Downloads and user interaction that triggers the lookup, after which the file runs with the user's privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
