Unauthenticated firmware replacement via exposed upload handler
Published Jan 14, 2025 · Updated Jan 14, 2025
Missing authentication in Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505 allows remote attackers to flash arbitrary firmware via HTTP. The upload.cgi handler writes POSTed image data to /var/tmpFW and invokes mtd_write_firmware after only U-Boot magic and CRC checks, without authenticating the requester. Network access to the router is sufficient; a successful upload rewrites device firmware and forces a reboot, enabling persistent device compromise.
