Routing denial of service via BGP memory leak
Published Jul 11, 2024 · Updated Feb 26, 2025
Memory exhaustion in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows remote attackers to interrupt routing via malformed BGP updates. The rpd process allocates memory while logging a bad BGP Path attribute and does not release that allocation in all error-handling paths. Reachability requires a BGP session capable of delivering the crafted update; repeated updates consume memory until rpd is manually restarted.
