Service interruption via exceptional TCP session handling
Published Oct 11, 2024 · Updated Oct 11, 2024
Improper exceptional-condition handling in cRPD on Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows remote attackers to cause CPU-based denial of service. The rpd-server repeatedly performs unexpected reads after crafted TCP traffic reaches the routing engine or a TCP session terminates unexpectedly, driving control-plane CPU utilization upward. No special configuration is required; BGP RIB sharding increases the impact, which is limited to service interruption from CPU exhaustion.
