Kernel panic via unchecked private writable mapping
Published Jul 12, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Reachable assertion in the Linux kernel 5.2 through 6.10-rc1 allows local users to panic the kernel via a private writable DRM shmem mapping. drm_gem_shmem_mmap fails to reject a copy-on-write mapping, so a subsequent write reaches the BUG_ON in vmf_insert_pfn_prot. Exploitation requires access to a DRM driver using the default shmem helpers and causes a system-wide kernel crash without reported data disclosure or modification.
