CVE-2024-39486

Local privilege escalation via PID refcount race

Published Jul 6, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Use-after-free in Linux kernel 6.6.9 through 6.6.36 and 6.7 allows local users to escalate privileges via concurrent DRM ioctls. drm_file_update_pid publishes filp->pid before taking the new PID reference, so a competing update can free that struct pid before get_pid increments it. CONFIG_PREEMPT_RCU and access to a DRM device node are required; exploitation can expose kernel memory, corrupt kernel state, or panic the host.
