CVE-2024-38633

Kernel crash via stale MAX3100 registration state

Published Jun 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in the Linux MAX3100 serial driver from 2.6.30 allows local users to crash the kernel during module reload. Removing the final MAX3100 device leaves uart_driver_registered set, so a later probe skips uart_register_driver and passes stale state into serial_core_register_port. Reachability requires local control of MAX3100 device removal and kernel-module reloading; the resulting kernel oops interrupts the host.
