CVE-2024-38612

Kernel compromise via stale generic-netlink registration

Published Jun 19, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Use-after-free in Linux kernel IPv6 Segment Routing allows local users to execute kernel code through a stale generic-netlink family. When seg6_hmac_init() fails with HMAC enabled and LWTUNNEL disabled, seg6_init() omits genl_unregister_family(), leaving freed family and per-network data reachable through netlink. An unprivileged local user can then read or overwrite reclaimed kernel memory or trigger a kernel panic; no remote packet path reaches the state.
