Code execution via unsafe filesystem path substitution
Published Jul 1, 2024 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Improper output escaping in mod_rewrite in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.59 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute code or disclose source files. Server-context RewriteRules treat a backreference or variable at the start of a substitution as a filesystem path without properly escaping the generated output. Exposure requires such a server-level substitution and a filesystem location that Apache permits but does not intentionally map to a URL.
