Local privilege escalation via use-after-free
Published Aug 13, 2024 · Updated Jul 10, 2025
Use-after-free in Microsoft DWM Core Library on affected Windows builds allows local users to elevate privileges by running a crafted application. Microsoft identifies reuse of freed memory in the DWM Core Library but has not published the affected object, function, or input sequence. Exploitation requires prior low-privilege access and no user interaction, and successful exploitation permits code execution with elevated rights.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
