CVE-2024-37861Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Process crash via unchecked particle-count parameter

Published Dec 5, 2024 · Updated Dec 6, 2024

Buffer overflow in nav2_amcl in ROS 2 and Nav2 Humble allows remote attackers to crash the process using a crafted YAML file. The max_particles parameter accepts extreme values that reach pf_alloc and pf_kdtree_alloc, where unchecked size arithmetic causes allocator overflow or excessive allocation. The attacker must cause nav2_amcl to start with the supplied parameter file; public demonstrations show process aborts and memory exhaustion, not code execution.
