CVE-2024-37535Public exploit

Host freeze via oversized terminal resize sequence

Published Jun 9, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Denial of service in GNOME VTE before 0.76.3 allows local users to freeze the host through a crafted terminal resize escape sequence. VTE accepts ANSI window-manipulation sequences containing dimensions such as 65,535 rows and columns and attempts the requested resize without a safe bound. A local user must print the sequence in a VTE-based terminal; the resulting memory consumption can crash the terminal or make the host unresponsive.
