Unauthenticated code execution via unrestricted file append
Published Jun 4, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Path traversal in Jan 0.4.12 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code through the local API's appendFileSync endpoint. The endpoint accepts an attacker-controlled pathname and content for a synchronous file append without restricting traversal outside the intended directory. No authentication or user interaction is required when the API is network-reachable, and writing startup files enables code execution under the Jan process account.
