Cross-tenant account takeover via duplicate SAML users
Published Jun 3, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Weak authentication in Northern.tech Mender Enterprise before 3.6.4 and 3.7.0 through 3.7.3 allows remote authenticated users to take over accounts. The backend authentication code accepts duplicate identities created through an attacker-controlled external SAML service and associates them with existing password-based users in other tenants. Exploitation requires privileged access to configure or manage SAML and a multi-tenant deployment; successful abuse crosses tenant, RBAC, password, and TOTP boundaries.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=0 <3.6.4

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
