CVE-2024-36985Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Authenticated code execution via unchecked sudobash arguments

Published Jul 1, 2024 · Updated Feb 28, 2025

RCE in Splunk Enterprise 9.0 through 9.0.9, 9.1 through 9.1.4, and 9.2 through 9.2.1 allows remote authenticated users to run commands. The copybuckets external lookup passes attacker-controlled arguments through erp_launcher.py to the sudobash helper, which opens a Bash shell without validating its input. A low-privileged account is sufficient when splunk_archiver is enabled, allowing commands to run with the Splunk service's permissions.
