CVE-2024-36983Network attack vector

Privileged code execution via runshellscript lookup chaining

Published Jul 1, 2024 · Updated Feb 28, 2025

Command injection in affected Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud Platform releases allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code. An external lookup invokes the deprecated runshellscript internal command, which inserts attacker-supplied code into the installation directory and runs it in the Splunk instance's privileged context. Exploitation requires authenticated access and user interaction, and successful execution grants the code the privileges of the Splunk platform process.
