CVE-2024-36956

Service interruption via unreleased thermal diagnostic memory

Published May 30, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Memory leak in Linux kernel 6.8 through 6.8.9 allows local users to interrupt service by exhausting memory during thermal-zone removal. The thermal_debug_tz_remove() path in drivers/thermal/thermal_debugfs.c frees the thermal_debugfs object but leaves diagnostic allocations unreachable. Impact requires local low-privilege access plus removal of a thermal zone containing diagnostic allocations; leaked kernel memory can accumulate until service is interrupted.
