CVE-2024-36827Public exploitNetwork attack vector

File disclosure and service interruption via XXE

Published Jun 7, 2024 · Updated Mar 28, 2025

XML external entity injection in ebookmeta before 1.2.8 allows remote attackers to read sensitive files via crafted ebook XML. The get_metadata path passes ebook XML to lxml without preventing external entity resolution, so a SYSTEM identifier can retrieve a local file or expand entities until parsing is disrupted. Reachability requires a consuming application to give an attacker-controlled FB2 or EPUB file to get_metadata while lxml is before 4.9.1; the consequences are file disclosure or parser interruption.
