CVE-2024-36751Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Service interruption via catastrophic URL regex backtracking

Published Jan 15, 2025 · Updated Feb 3, 2025

Regular expression denial of service in parse-uri 1.0.9 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to interrupt applications via a crafted URL. The URL-checking expression at index.js lines 28–29 applies an inefficient match to long repeated character sequences, causing excessive backtracking. Reachability requires a consuming application to pass an attacker-controlled URL to the parser; the resulting CPU consumption stalls parsing and interrupts the hosting service.
