Script execution via unescaped emoji alt text
Published Nov 29, 2024 · Updated Nov 29, 2024
Cross-site scripting in Zulip 8.3 allows remote authenticated users to execute script in another user's browser via crafted emoji alt text. The replace_emoji_with_text function returns an image element's alt attribute to jQuery replaceWith, which interprets the string as HTML rather than text. Exploitation requires low-privileged access and user interaction, enabling script execution in the affected page's origin.
