Privilege escalation via writable service binary
Published Jun 13, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Local privilege escalation in AdGuard Home 0.93 through versions before 0.94 allows local users to execute code as root or SYSTEM. The service installation leaves the AdGuardHome executable replaceable by an unprivileged account, and the daemon executes that path on restart. Exploitation requires an installed service, local binary replacement, and a subsequent restart; the payload then inherits the service account's privileges.
