CVE-2024-36496Public exploit

Configuration disclosure via static RC4 key

Published Jun 24, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025

Hard-coded-key cryptography in Faronics WINSelect before 8.30.xx.903 allows local users to decrypt its configuration file. WINSelect hashes a static five-character password with unsalted MD5, takes the first five digest bytes as an RC4 key, and applies that key to WINSelect.wsd. Access to the file is required; decryption exposes configuration contents, while this CVE alone does not modify workstation restrictions.
