Adjacent-network JavaScript execution via automatic portal launch
Published May 28, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Origin validation error in GNOME Shell through 45.7 allows remote attackers to load untrusted JavaScript through its portal helper. The network-status code opens the captive-portal helper automatically from adversary-controlled network responses, without confirmation. An attacker controlling the local Wi-Fi network can consume resources through the loaded script; other script-dependent impacts remain unspecified.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
