Screen spoofing via unfiltered archive comments
Published May 21, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
ANSI escape injection in console RAR and UnRAR in RARLAB WinRAR before 7.00 allows attackers to spoof archive listings on Windows. The console tools print attacker-controlled archive comments without filtering ESC characters, allowing terminal controls to hide genuine output and render a false file list. A victim must list a crafted archive in a terminal; the resulting display can disguise an executable as a benign document, while the GUI and UnRAR library remain unaffected.
