CVE-2024-36020

System hang via stale VF pointer

Published May 30, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Race condition in the Linux i40e virtual-function reset path allows local users to hang affected systems during concurrent resets. The i40e VF-reset loop advances an index and its VF pointer from different sources, so the pointer can remain stale and select an unintended VF. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and concurrent Intel i40e SR-IOV reset activity; affected Linux and Siemens systems can hang.
