Local kernel crash via unchecked network-device pointer
Published May 20, 2024 · Updated May 12, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in the IPv4 routing path in Linux 5.5 and later allows local users to crash the kernel. ip_route_use_hint() passes an unchecked NULL result from __in_dev_get_rcu() into fib_validate_source(), which dereferences the missing IPv4 device state. Local users reach the path through BPF XDP test-run processing; successful triggering causes an availability-only kernel fault.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
