CVE-2024-35973

Kernel crash via VLAN-skewed Geneve header

Published May 20, 2024 · Updated May 23, 2026

Improper header validation in Linux Geneve transmission allows local users to crash the kernel through a crafted VLAN-tagged packet. geneve_xmit_skb relies on pskb_inet_may_pull, which checks skb->protocol and skips pulling when an AF_PACKET caller supplies a VLAN tag, leaving the network header misaligned and data uninitialized. Exploitation requires low-privileged local packet-socket access and affects availability only through a kernel crash.
