CVE-2024-35888

Kernel crash via non-linear ERSPAN header access

Published May 19, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Uninitialized-variable use in Linux 5.0 and affected stable branches allows local users to crash the kernel via crafted ERSPAN traffic. The ip6erspan_rcv() and erspan_rcv() paths read the ERSPAN version field before ensuring erspan_base_hdr is in the skb linear head. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access able to inject the packet into the receive path; the documented consequence is service interruption, not data access or modification.
