CVE-2024-35871

Kernel-address disclosure via uncleared RISC-V gp register

Published May 19, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Information disclosure in the RISC-V Linux kernel allows local users to read a kernel global-pointer address from user context. The copy_thread routine initializes childregs for kernel-created user-mode-helper threads but leaves the gp register holding __global_pointer$ instead of clearing it. Access through ptrace, performance sampling, or tracing around exec exposes a kernel address that weakens address-space randomization; no direct data modification is reported.
