Local use-after-free via SMB session teardown race
Published May 19, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel SMB client allows local users to corrupt kernel memory by racing a statistics read with session teardown. The cifs_stats_proc_show() function walks smb_ses_list and dereferences a session after teardown has begun instead of excluding SES_EXITING entries. A CIFS or SMB session must enter teardown while its statistics are read; published evidence establishes no consequence beyond kernel memory corruption.
