CVE-2024-35865Network attack vector

Kernel crash via exiting SMB session traversal

Published May 19, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Use-after-free in the Linux kernel SMB client allows remote attackers to crash a system through a crafted SMB2 oplock-break response. The smb2_is_valid_oplock_break() handler traverses a session's connection list after the session enters SES_EXITING, so teardown can free an object that the handler still reaches. An active SMB client connection and overlapping session teardown are required; the documented consequence is a kernel panic, while code execution has not been established.
