CVE-2024-35861Network attack vector

Kernel compromise via SMB session teardown race

Published May 19, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

A use-after-free in the SMB client of affected Linux kernel versions allows remote attackers to corrupt kernel memory via a malicious SMB server. The cifs_signal_cifsd_for_reconnect function walks the session list and accesses cifs_ses channel state while teardown can free the session and clear its server pointers. An already-mounted share is sufficient for a malicious or compromised SMB server to trigger kernel memory reads or writes, control-flow hijacking, or a panic without further user action.
