CVE-2024-35848

Kernel crash via stale nvmem device access

Published May 17, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Race condition in the at24 EEPROM driver in Linux allows local users to crash the kernel through a stale nvmem device reference. When an inaccessible EEPROM causes initialization to fail, the driver registers an nvmem device before teardown, permitting another driver to access freed memory. Successful triggering requires local low-privileged access, an affected at24 configuration, an EEPROM read failure, and concurrent access during teardown.
