CVE-2024-35844

File unavailability via F2FS reserved-block miscount

Published May 17, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

An F2FS compressed-block accounting error in Linux allows local users to leave files unrecoverable after storage exhaustion. In reserve_compress_blocks(), an -ENOSPC return bypasses reserved_blocks += ret, leaving the counter at zero and preventing the fsck repair flag from being set. Reaching the flaw requires local low-privileged access, an F2FS compressed file with one direct node, and a nearly full filesystem; the affected file remains unusable until filesystem repair runs.
