CVE-2024-35823Network attack vector

Service interruption via overlapping Unicode buffer copy

Published May 17, 2024 · Updated May 12, 2026

Buffer corruption in the Linux virtual-terminal subsystem allows remote attackers to interrupt terminal operation via crafted character deletion. The Unicode deletion path in drivers/tty/vt/vt.c calls memcpy on overlapping source and destination regions, corrupting the display buffer as characters shift. Network reachability depends on a service that forwards attacker-controlled characters to a virtual console; direct console access also reaches the path.
