Code execution via untrusted checkpoint deserialization
Published Apr 10, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Code execution in Hugging Face Transformers before 4.38.0 allows remote attackers to run commands through a malicious checkpoint. The TFPreTrainedModel.load_repo_checkpoint method passes checkpoint/extra_data.pickle directly to pickle.load without validating its source or contents. Exploitation requires a victim to load an attacker-supplied checkpoint during TensorFlow model training, after which the payload runs with the victim process's privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
