CVE-2024-35235Public exploit

Arbitrary permission changes via unchecked socket binding

Published Jun 11, 2024 · Updated Feb 21, 2025

Improper link handling in OpenPrinting CUPS 2.4.8 and earlier allows local users to make files world writable through cupsd. In httpAddrListen, cupsd ignores failed unlink and bind calls, then applies chmod mode 0140777 to a configured Unix-socket path that can resolve through an attacker-planted symbolic link. Exploitation requires the ability to edit cupsd.conf or win a daemon-startup race; on Ubuntu, writable CUPS configuration can be chained to root command execution.
