Root escalation via writable privileged configuration

Published May 16, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Privilege escalation in Stalwart Labs Stalwart Mail Server before 0.8.0 allows remote authenticated users to execute commands as root. The administration interface permits its configuration to be changed so the service runs as root, after which a configured pipe filter executes attacker-chosen commands. Administrative credentials or prior code execution as the stalwart-mail service account are required, and successful exploitation grants complete host control.
