Code execution via unchecked PHAR image path
Published May 5, 2024 · Updated Aug 21, 2024
PHAR deserialization in Spatie Image Optimizer before 1.7.3 allows remote authenticated users to execute code through a crafted image path. The Image constructor passes the unvalidated path to file_exists(), so a phar:// wrapper makes PHP deserialize archive metadata and instantiate arbitrary objects. Exploitation requires an attacker-controlled uploaded file, control of the path passed to the library, and an available PHP POP gadget chain.
