SYSTEM privilege escalation via writable DLL search paths
Published May 5, 2024 · Updated Aug 21, 2024
Local privilege escalation in Clario Desktop through 2024-04-11 allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM. ClarioService.exe searches weakly permissioned ProgramData directories for missing DLLs and loads a planted library with SYSTEM privileges. A low-privileged Windows account must place a matching DLL and start an antivirus scan; successful exploitation grants complete SYSTEM control.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
