CVE-2024-34027

Filesystem metadata corruption via unlocked compression changes

Published Jun 24, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Race condition in Linux Kernel F2FS compression handling allows local users to corrupt filesystem metadata after sudden power loss. The reserve_compress_blocks() and release_compress_blocks() paths modify block addresses, inode fields, and total_valid_block_count without holding cp_rwsem, allowing checkpoint processing to race with those updates. Reaching the corruption requires local low-privileged access, F2FS compression operations, a concurrent checkpoint, and sudden power loss.
