CVE-2024-33899Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Terminal spoofing and hangs via unfiltered ANSI escapes

Published Apr 28, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

ANSI escape injection in RARLAB console RAR and UnRAR 6.24 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to spoof output or hang a terminal. Archive comments are written to screen output without removing character 27, so terminals interpret embedded ANSI controls instead of displaying them as data. Exploitation requires a user to list a crafted archive; a demonstrated payload hides the real file list, while Linux or UNIX terminal controls can freeze the session.
