Unauthenticated server crash via oversized FTDC BSON
Published May 14, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Reachable assertion in MongoDB Server 5.0 through 5.0.16 and 6.0 through 6.0.5 allows remote attackers to crash mongod. While FTDC generates diagnostic metrics, mongod attempts to build a BSON object beyond the permitted memory size and terminates on a fatal assertion. Network access without authentication is sufficient; the reported consequence is interruption of the database service, not data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=5.0 <=5.0.16
- Affected versionversion=6.0 <=6.0.5
