CVE-2024-3296Network attack vector

RSA plaintext recovery via error-dependent decryption timing

Published Apr 4, 2024 · Updated Feb 25, 2026

A timing side channel in rust-openssl 3.2.0 and later allows remote attackers to recover RSA plaintext via repeated decryption requests. The RSA PKCS#1 v1.5 decryption wrapper branches on OpenSSL error values, making response timing dependent on padding validity. Exploitation requires an application to expose legacy PKCS#1 v1.5 decryption and accept a large number of chosen ciphertexts over a network.
