Code execution via address-decoding heap buffer over-read
Published May 9, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Heap buffer over-read in The HDF Group HDF5 1.14.3 and earlier allows local users to corrupt the instruction pointer during address decoding. H5F_addr_decode_len in H5Fint.c reads beyond a heap buffer while decoding a file address; public upstream material does not disclose the missing validation. Triggering requires a local HDF5 parsing path, and instruction-pointer corruption can crash the process or permit code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
