Code execution or crash via native-type heap overflow
Published May 9, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Heap-based buffer overflow in The HDF Group HDF5 1.14.3 and earlier allows local users to crash applications or execute code via crafted HDF5 data. H5T__get_native_type in H5Tnative.c writes beyond a heap allocation while deriving a native datatype; published records do not identify the malformed field or missing validation. The attacker must cause a process linked to the library to parse the data, and instruction-pointer corruption bounds the consequence to a crash or potential code execution with that process's privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
Public exploit references
