Application crash via unsafe link-name duplication
Published May 9, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Heap-based buffer over-read in The HDF Group HDF5 1.14.3 and earlier allows attackers to crash applications via crafted HDF5 files. H5G__ent_to_link passes a nonterminated link name from file metadata to H5MM_xstrdup, whose strdup call reads beyond the heap buffer. Opening attacker-controlled HDF5 files is required; the upstream project also reports potential code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
