Local service interrupt via incomplete free-list bounds check
Published May 9, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Heap-based buffer over-read in HDF5 1.14.3 and earlier allows local users to interrupt a consuming process via a crafted HDF5 file. H5HL__fl_deserialize accepts a free-list offset anywhere below the heap block size, then decodes two size fields without verifying that both remain inside the buffer. Exploitation requires a process linked to the vulnerable library to parse attacker-controlled local-heap metadata; the bounded demonstrated consequence is a crash.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
