Root command execution via quarantined recipient address
Published Apr 29, 2024 · Updated Aug 27, 2024
OS command injection in MailCleaner 2023.03.14 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands as root via crafted email. The clean_spam_quarantine.pl cronjob passes quarantine directory names derived from recipient addresses unsanitized to system() during deletion. Exploitation requires a quarantined message and a valid, catch-all, unverifiable, or sub-addressed recipient; the daily cronjob then runs the payload as root.
